Nine times in seven verses in this chapter “rock” is mentioned so I thought it would be a good chapter for this NSTC chapel 2018. Let’s look at the first few verses before getting into the “rock” verses.
Deut. 32:1-3 Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak,
and let the earth hear the words of my mouth.
May my teaching drop as the rain,
my speech distill as the dew,
like gentle rain upon the tender grass,
and like showers upon the herb.
For I will proclaim the name of the Lord;
ascribe greatness to our God!
Is that your prayer?
Is that your purpose?
Are you intentional at proclaiming who God is and ascribing greatness to our God?
This should be your goal and my goal in life. What holds you back from broadcasting this truth, His truth, and from declaring them?
I so enjoy sharing God’s word and talking about Him and studying who He is. I hope you do too.
Deut. 32:4 The Rock, his work is perfect,
for all his ways are justice.
A God of faithfulness and without iniquity,
just and upright is he.
The Lord, God, Jesus is called the Rock. This too is a great prayer. Do you pray Scripture? I hope you do. It is a good thing to do. Look at the attributes we see here of the LORD – work is perfect; ways are justice; faithfulness; without iniquity; just ; upright. Those are some powerful attributes. Have you thought about the meaning of those six words in the context of God?
Work is perfect – This is amazing to think about. Without fault, flawless, 100%, absolute, complete
Justice – can see the reality and the truth and not deceived by words or action. Impartiality, honest, know the standards and law and about to measure the thoughts, actions and words of all
Faithfulness – dependability, reliability, trustworthiness. Firm in knowing the person will do what they say they are going to do they will do.
Without iniquity – there is NO sin in God. He can’t sin.
Just – Is not swayed by words, actions, thoughts. Just is to be impartial, objective, unbiased. God see all and knows all and is about to be right in His law and rulings on the law.
Upright – honest, fair, in God case blameless, without fault
Deut. 32:12,13 the Lord alone guided him, no foreign god was with him. He made him ride on the high places of the land, and he ate the produce of the field, and he suckled him with honey out of the rock, and oil out of the flinty rock.
Not much of a comment here accept two brief ones. 1) God is the One and Only that carried Israel and continues to carry her. 2) Israel is a rocky nation in land scape. I have only seen pictures but it is pretty clear what the terrain is like. One last thing and it is important! You don’t want to be against Israel. God makes that clear throughout His Word.
Deut. 32:14,15 Curds from the herd, and milk from the flock, with fat of lambs, rams of Bashan and goats, with the very finest of the wheat— and you drank foaming wine made from the blood of the grape. But Jeshurun grew fat, and kicked; you grew fat, stout, and sleek; then he forsook God who made him and scoffed at the Rock of his salvation.
I am not sure I want to go here with these two verses but it is clear and a clear warning we all need to hear or at the least I need to. This person collected much wealth and things and it lead to drinking, eating too much and then forsaking God. Ouch! This sounds too much like America and the American church. The person scoffed at the Rock of his salvation. What choices are you making with your time? With your treasure? With your talent? Think about that. No, I mean really stop and think about that.
Read Deut 32:16-18 Let’s be clear, Who gave you life? It is Jesus! it is God! SO it is not just today that many do not understand that life, every life is from God and should be protected and that each person should be turning to God for salvation, seeking and finding Him. God made you and His has a plan and purpose for you and your life. Don’t try to change that. Do what is right and lawful.
Read Deut 32:19-21. Those are scary verses. Just thinking of God being anger, upset, His wrath. Those are no laughing matters. God is Almighty and all powerful. Throughout our study in Proverbs we talked about the proper fear of the LORD and the importance of it in our lives. Do you fear the LORD in the right way? The way we thought about it from Proverbs?
Deut 32:29-32 29 If they were wise, they would understand this; they would discern their latter end! How could one have chased a thousand, and two have put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, and the Lord had given them up? For their rock is not as our Rock; our enemies are by themselves.
God wants us to be wise and to understand, also an echo from Proverbs. He wants us to stand on the Rock, on the solid ground of Jesus Christ. That is where the victory over sin and enemies is. You caught the line “the LORD…” That is hard to hear and sad. There is a huge ditch on both sides so be very careful as you think about it.
Deut 32:37 Then he will say, ‘Where are their gods, the rock in which they took refuge
The final verse in this ‘rock chapter’ is questioning what and where are those things that we place as gods in our life? When it really matters what will those false gods do for us and why do we give them such powerful places in our lives? Where are you taking refuge?
We see in this chapter “rock and “Rock” appear a number of times and it is fitting for NSTC at Rockford. Just as fitting is to remember a couple of other “rock” passages:
1 Samuel 2:2 There is none holy like the Lord: for there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God.
Psalm 18:2 The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
1 Corinthians 10:4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.
This is a clear point of Deity! The Rock is God and Christ is the Rock. Jesus is the Christ. Jesus is God!
Have a great day racin’ in the SONshine,
