Got a Question? God’s Got an Answer!

The beginning of the season can have many questions to it. Many of the answers can be found if we just ask the right person with the right knowledge. I have found that sometimes people with no insight will answer. Funny that they often speak as if they have the knowledge or answers but they just sound good until you get the real answer. Instead, it is best to go to a true reliable source. It might be the rule book or a tech guy or promoter. The same is true in life. We want to get the answers from the true and reliable source and that would be God and He has given us His Word, the Bible, and His Spirit to get answers from. That is why it is so important for us to be in the Word daily.

Let’s continue our study of First John by reading 1 John 5-8
This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

What questions do we need to answer here? Let’s start with these:

What is “the message”?

What have “we heard” and “proclaim”?

Who is “him”?

The “message” is God is light and the Word and He gives us a message of hope in the gospel. The message that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God and that He is the only way to salvation and that He paid the price for our sin, died on the cross and rose from the grave and that those that call on the Name of the Lord, that Jesus is LORD will be saved.

Many of us have “heard” the message. Unfortunately many have rejected the message, not really, really many have rejected Jesus, God. What is just as unfortunate is that many have “churched” themselves hoping that will save them or “liking” a facebook message in hope of “points”. It isn’t even good enough to pray a prayer or go up front at camp. Too many line in darkness and hope it’s ok to just sprinkle in a little Jesus, a little light. We have to hear the message and in our heart and life surrender to God and HIs message. The word and thought of “heard” is something deep inside us and not just on the surface. See the difference?

Look at the next phrase, “from Him”. The Him is God, it is Jesus. Not only that phrase but it is followed by, “proclaimed to you”. WOW. Stop and soak that in. God, the creator of the universe. The one that gives life. The one that is fully true and fully perfect in every way, loved you and I so much He has spoken His word to us. Let me back up and say that when I hear the word “proclaim” in my mind I think of a strong word than said or even spoke. I think it is to tell, or announce or speak with force and direct power. This is all good.

Now we have built a good base to move on to what this proclamation is. There are many in Scripture and this one is – God is light. We are going to see many repeated themes in this book kind of like what we saw in Proverbs and the Book of John when we studied them (you can go back to website if interested in those messages). Why is it so important to know God is light? Because we can see in the light and in the darkness we are blind. Light illuminates, it reveals. Darkness, sin, hides, it tries to conceal. So where do most people want to live? In the gray. But gray is not pure, it is not clean, it is not holy. Do you see why that is such a huge problem for the modern church that is trying to be as close to the world as it can be instead of standing out as different, peculiar, and being as close to God and obedience as you can.

Do you say you have fellowship with God? How does your life prove that out? What sin, darkness will you allow in to your life, into your marriage, your family, your home, your work? God gets very direct here. He says it is a lie! And He adds there is not practice of the truth. This word practice is going to be used a bunch of times in 1 John. We should be paying attention as we come across it.

He wants us to walk in the light at all times. That means to be in the truth, tell the truth, speak the truth, live the truth out. The light is that of living in holiness. It is the Scripture. That is why daily we need to be in the Word. The by-product of walking in the light is fellowship, pure, real fellowship not the fake friendship of facebook and other social media. We just had a young man from Uganda speak at church and that is one of the things he talked about. In America there just is not time or deep personal relationships compared to Uganda and the church there.

We can’t miss the end of verse seven. There is so much to catch there. We see the blood mentioned but not just any blood. It is the blood of Jesus. We see that Jesus is God’s Son. This points to His deity. We see Jesus’ blood cleanse. And we see that Jesus’ blood, His death on the cross, cleanses all sin. So that should have us on our knees in repentance. Verse seven and this part of the verse points to verse nine but let’s look at eight first.

Verse eight we see a clear statement that if we say we are without sin we are WRONG. We are deceived. And the truth is not in us. Catch the “in”. The Holy Spirit is in us so this is a big statement. We can’t have truth in us without having the Spirit in us so we have to have salvation to know truth.

We will pick it up with verse nine next time.

Have a great day racin’ in the SONshine,

Todd
