Who Tells Who

I am sure you have heard like I have of the young driver that tells the owners what to do and what he “gets”, he demands this or that. Funny thing, the next event is usually a press release telling of the release of the driver. I have heard the same with a crew chief.

This morning I was praying and thinking and God reminded me that we cannot tell God what we demand, what we “should” get. This should affect our prayer life and how we pray. If we pray, “God give me…” that is wrong thinking, wrong praying.

So do we demand health, wealth, a fast car, a great marriage, kids, job? Do we demand happiness, the best house, clothes, vacation? I want to think with you about some of these and please do ponder this prayerfully.

Let’s start with health. It is an affront for us to pray for health and then eat too much, drink too much, take drugs for comfort, (whether legal or illegal; over the counter or prescribed) and then say, LORD give me good health. If we abuse our body, the temple according to God’s Word, why should we think we should be healthy?

Should we pray for a healthy strong marriage, but not follow God’s Word? For a husband that is the protection of the wife and the washing her with the Word. So if we do not read the Bible with our wives, why would we expect God to just give us a marriage that is good?

What about kids? Yes we should want our children to obey and to be “good” kids. So if we don’t invest in them why would we presume to have “good” kids? The Bible is clear that Dad’s are to teach the children, not schools, not churches (but they are good to echo what we are teaching them, read that twice, I am not saying they are bad or not necessary). Father’s are to be sharing the Scriptures daily with the children. More than sharing, impressing Scripture upon them. We are to do that in living it out, obeying God in front of them, and reading it to them.

Should we demand happiness if we are not following the Lord, if we are not obeying? NO! Think about our purchases. If we do not pray, just focus our way or try not to think about buying this or that, why would we think God is going to bless us?

Do you see why it is so important for us to bow, humbly, before Him? So do we not pray? Of course we are to pray. What does it look like? We should ask God what His will is and may it be done. Most of all we are to be obeying God’s Word and following near to Him. What encouragement that is.

Here are some lessons and examples from Scripture:

Matthew 6:10 Your (God) kingdom come, Your (God) will be done

Romans 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Hebrews 6:3 And God permitting, we will do so.

Romans 15:32-33 32 so that by God’s will I may come to you with joy and together with you be refreshed. 33 The God of peace be with you all. Amen.

See you at a track soon and have a great day racin’ in the SONshine,

Thank you for the reminder on how to pray! Not only do we need to pray for His will, but I also think it is so important to remember to pray for the acceptance of God’s will. Some times we want His will to be done, but we have a hard time accepting it as His will. It does not say that all things are good, but that He will work good out of all things!
    Romans 8:28
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
